He can't ride as he lives in what at the moment is a frozen wasteland. Checking the weather it's a whopping 8 degrees right now. If you have never ridden one it's a good experience to swing a leg over one. Every time I do it my arms hurt the next day. They have a smile and giggle factor that only the 500cc two strokes can have. That said I choose not to own one. I hate starting those things and I spent ten years on a hard to start XR600. There are downsides. A CR500 is pretty much a track only bike due to the close ratio transmission. If you gear it for desert speed, gnarly singletrack is a handful unless you go really fast. If you gear it for the tight stuff it tops out at 45. The KX is somewhat better and makes a better bike off the track. Plus the KX has that power valve so the torque curve is broader. Back in the late 80's and 90's the Baja 1000 was pretty much the KX500 or XR600. Honda developed the XR650 with the specific intent to displace the KX500 from the top spot of the podium. It did what it was designed for. My money is on CDA for the race. I know that his racing resume is a little more filled out than yours. Hell I'm slow and I could easily devise a plan where your bike would have little chance of success. Likewise you would smoke me on a MX track because I've done a total on one lap on a MX track in my decades of riding. A little more seriously, have you ever tried you skills against a pro rider? It's usually quite humbling for most of us mere mortal riders.
