Even if it IS only plastic it'll keep the rotor from getting dinged up from small rocks being thrown at you...Now I doubt that it'll do any good when you're riding on rocky terrain I mean big, basket ball sized rocks) when your tire slips off one and the rotor slams on it... Better to have it and not need it then to need it and not have it.
