We like my old indoor propane lighting. We like tending the woodburning stove in the winter. It's awesome and the kids, I think, see the value in the simplicity of it all, the work it takes to maintain it, and most of all, the benefits and rewards of being totally self-sufficient, if even for a weekend. I think the dad's know they are teaching some great life lessons here and making memories for these kids that they will pass on to their kids.

14 year old just got his first wild turkey hunting with his dad! [QUOTE="Buckrun, post: 10278, member: 51"] Good topic WG! I don't have kids myself, but my friends bring theirs to my cabin all the time. There are zero modern conveniences there. No electricity (propane lights out of old 1950's campers) no cell phone service (the kids iPhones don't work) water comes from a spring, and 90% of the cooking is done on an open fire. This all requires a lot of work. And the kids are tasked with getting it done. They are all aged 11 to 16. They love it! They are bummed when they can't make a weekend! They have great entertainment doing good stuff! They get to ride, hunt, fish, shoot, roam around on 4300 acres. It's cool to see that they want to help fetching water from the spring, getting firewood, clearing trails, cleaning the cabin, keeping things right. It's wholesome and fun as hell! The dad's love it as much as the boys do. I can get poles sunk and get electricity, drill a well, put in a phone line or a dish, but I won't. It's the fact that this place is so elemental in it's simplicity that makes it cool. I like getting my water from a spring and carrying it. That's a chore the kids don't mind doing. We like my old indoor propane lighting. We like tending the woodburning stove in the winter.
