2 Stroke Picked up a bargain SX50 today :)

As title says.. Absolute bargain today!
Went to view a 2012 KTM SX50, with small and big wheels set...
Viewed it, all good.. Seller started it up, and it started spitting out coolant...
A bit annoyed that i had driven 2 hours to view it, potentially for nothing.. I asked him what he'd accept for it, Seeing as it has an issue somewhere...

basically.. I ended up getting the bike.. A set of talon big wheels with brand new Pirelli tyres fitted.... A KTM bike stand.. Box of brand new plastics and a bag of assorted sized sprockets....
All for £500!!! (English Pounds)

Turned out the Right side bottom rad pipe has a small perish from where the jubilee clamps have worn into the rubber....

So anyway.. Few questions...

Does anyone know:

* The stocksuspension settings, front and rear?
* Stock Fuel/Oil Ratio? 50:1?!?! (20ml oil per 1 Litre of fuel)
* Why are these SX50's such a pain to start when your child falls off them?
* Why do they eat spark plugs for fun? (always hear about it)
*Whats the recommended amount of hours per top end? I read extremely conflicting info everywere... Some saying 20 hours.. Some saying 30.. and other places saying 100 hours!!!!!
* stock air pressure for left side fork leg?
* What is the capacity for the gear oil? I plan on using ATF Dexron 3 in it...

My daughter absolutely loves the bike.. 6 years old, and just stepping up from a Yamaha PW50....

Much appreciated..

That's a great score!
Looks pretty nice!
Top ends last anywhere from 20-100 based on how they are ridden. Race pace, expect 20 hours. Just a child riding in the front yard, many more hours than 20.
Here's the owner's Manual.

Thanks very much dude.. Much appreciated..

My daughter has been crazy hyper all day, Itching to ride it :smirk:
Been doing a few checks on it tonight... Compression test, inspecting and re-greasing swing arm bearings etc etc
So will be letting her have a rip on it tomorrow...

She is far from a "race pace" skill level yet...
I'd say... her PW50 was too slow for her, and holding her back... But she will now require time to gain confidence on a new bike, before she will start opening it up...
So based on that.. It would be fair to say, Many more than 20 hours to a piston :D

After she has her fun on it tomorrow, I will be pulling the head off, measuring the barrel etc, and ordering up a new piston and gasket set for it..
£65 for a Vertex piston, and gaskets, Seams good to me :)

I must admit though.. I dont know how i feel about the fact that it has no restrictable clutch...
My daughter more than likely wont require it.. She has pretty good sense of throttle control... But still... Would have been nice to know its there, incase...

But i cant grumble too much.. £500 for a tidy little bike... Well happy :) and on top of that.. Sold her 2014 PW50basically instantly, for £900... So defo quids in :)

Great news! What a steal!
I imagine you'll not be replacing the top end very often.
Kids don't need restrictions, just safe environments to do dangerous things!

Well.. My daughter woke me up nice and early this morning, Excited to try out her bike..
Got it out and started it up, 1st kick....

She liked the bike.. But although she didnt tell me.. I could tell by her face that it startled her a little bit...
The clutch is VERY snappy when engaging...
Its like, rev.. rev.. rev a little more...... Shot off the line....
There seams to be no gentle easing in of the clutch engagement and wheel drive...
Its just sharp, snappy and instant....

I put a smaller rear sprocket on it.. In an attempt to try and lessen the acceleration, because lets face it, She wont be seeing its top speed any time soon.. But honestly.. didnt help much at all...

I hope 2009-2012 are similar.

Page 114 has adjustment of the clutch. Requires more effort, but seemingly adjustable. Might not do much based on component wear.
Good Luck! -BIG DAN:thumb:

Ahh nice :)
I got told that they just arent adjustable... lol

Her bike seams to rev quite alot, before the clutch kicks in.. So when it does kick in.. It bursts off like a rocket.. Which is what is scaring her a little...

So the clutch possibly has a 2nd washer added to it?!?!
Because if i am correct.. I want to lower the clutch engagement revs?
So it kicks in sooner, at lower revs.. and hopefully removing the sudden burst of power..

I removed the clutch, Because i have been reading that some have a washer stack.. and some have springs...
Apparently you can get softer springs.. if its the spring version...

Only issue is.. There bolt head to undo the clutch shoe, Is hidden underneith this............
Well atleast thats what it shows on a manual.

How the heck do i remove this?! lol

Interesting!
If it doesn't pry out easily like a dust cover...
That could be the head of the bolt and uses a castled wrench?
Sometimes they sell a pin spanner that can be used to removed castled hardware.

Okay.. It doesnt pull out.. Thats actually the part of the bolt head, that bolts the shoes to the inner hub..
According to KTM, Part No: 45229021000
They actually call it "KTM special clutch tool".....
So have ordered that, So that i can see wether my clutch has the washer stack, or springs...

Im really hoping it is springs, Because then i can order KTM's "yellow A" springs... Which are softest...
Thus, making clutch engage at alot lower revs... :)

According to the 2012 KTM parts diagram.. It shows springs... So i have my fingers crossed, that mine is..

£25 for their "special clutch tool" though.... urgh..
