I think I mentioned that I take a similar approach. But hell, I don't check compression on anything. If someone has a fresh receipt from a shop I know that says they put on a new cylinder or replated one, it means something. "Fresh topend" means almost nothing. Used parts. I offer based on what it is worth needing plating and a fresh piston unless I know the bike well. Sometimes all the owner is asking is what I would be willing to pay based on the above anyway. No need to look further. Buy, take home and take apart.
