Before the desert protection act (yea I'm old) I would camp out in the New York Mtns at about 5800 feet.  That is now the East Mojave preserve.  It was cool enough even in the summer as long as it wasn't a heat wave or something.  No single track or anything, but hey you could still get out there. 


I've also camped at the microwave towers up above Dove Springs.  That is about 6200 feet.  It's usually liveable up there.  These days if I'm going to the trouble of something like that I just head up into the Piutes.
