I really think that would be worse than death right there.From what I've gathered is that he severed his brain stem and is in a "locked-in" state.
From Wikipedia:
Locked-in syndrome is a condition in which a patient is aware and awake but cannot move or communicate verbally due to complete paralysis of nearly all voluntary muscles in the body except for the eyes.
Basically he's alert and aware of his surroundings however due to the brain stem being severed he can't move anything below his eyes. Here's an article on someone that came back from being "locked-in", the difference being that he'd suffered a stroke (not a severed brain stem).
