I'm going with a cut and then it cracked. Look at the second photo. You can see the aluminum peeled over like a cut and it's straight. That pattern stops and them the crack starts.

^^^^^^^ Yep, I'm going with this as well. When I got my first Phd in metallurgy , my thesis was titled, "Sure it looks cracked from one side but, check out the other side that's been cut." (got an A+ by the way)
That's a YZ frame, with a known cracking issue.
YZ's from 2005-2007 all had cold welds.
There is no way you could start a cut with a saw(zall) without making one single scratch around the cut. The reason it's 'mushrooming' around the crack is because the frame was bending/banging together right there.

It's a kx250f. He has been in contact with Kawi HQ and last I heard they were replacing it.
Late to the party but that was all crack! Cool that Kawi is replacing it and he didn't get hurt from complete failure.
