Mine has a little chunky some times, but not any worse than my other bikes. Are any bikes butter smooth all the time?
Until they wore out and started devloping false neutrals, my XR's and XL's had great smooth shifting transmissions. It's not like the Beta is bad, it's just a little temperamental at times.
