Instead of WD40, try Engine Brite degreaser.This past week, my bike has gotten almost a FULL make over. Those of whom I have rode with from this forum know how my poor bike was neglected and it's looks suffered greatly (although it runs awesome since I changed the top end on it a couple months ago). I told myself I would get her like new again and keep her appearance up and I meant it. I'm still working on cleaning the pipe, swing arm and engine up (WD40, a drill, steel brush wheel and Mothers polish work wonders) more but it should hopefully look like new soon!
