The service manual gives exact measurements for the cam chain to check for wear. A worn cam chain will alter the timing of the cams and everything related to it. Being tight is not enough. Those cam chains wear quickly. If the valves had to be adjusted, you can almost count on the cam chain being worn out.

assembled correctly. GAWD I love it when 5 sentences get lost when you hit send.

The tensioner will tighten the chain. It WON'T set the timing. Wear changes timing. Can you see how that might be? I think I mentioned the entertainment I get from hearing how others clean caburetors. Funnier yet is how they are set up. That carburetor is one of the most intricate ones.
