Hey Taxpayer, Who do you really pay for?
Dear OCEA member,
This morning, your OCEA bargaining team met with the County, and the County continued to refuse to provide you and your families with a wage increase. The County’s CEO, executives and elected officials continue to ask concessions from you, while at the same time refusing to give up their enormous perks. Here’s what County CEO Mike Giancola has stuffed in his Christmas stocking for himself and his executives:
1. The “Two Mercedes Car Allowance”: County executives receive $765 per month to pay for their vehicles. That’s enough to lease two Mercedes Benz!
2. On top of their pensions, an additional pension (defined contribution plan). Taxpayers pay 8 percent into this personal executive piggy bank.
3. Annual cash bonus: Executives get a $4,500 so-called “optional benefit,” which is supposed to pay for education. But since the County doesn’t require them to submit receipts, they take it all in cash and don’t have to tell anyone how they spent it!
4. Special vacation accruals: Executives can accrue more annual leave time than anyone else—up to 296 hours per year.
5. Extra annual leave cash outs: Executives can also cash out more than FOUR TIMES as much annual leave as OCEA employees can cash out each year. Executives get up to 170 hours!
6. Golden parachutes: When executives like Giancola retire, they get to cash out even more of their annual leave balances than anyone else. Some can get as much as 580 hours at 100 percent, and up to a total of 1,600 hours at up to 50 percent.
(All these perks have led to huge six-figure payouts—
just read this story for more details about that.)
So we know County executives will be treating themselves nicely this holiday season. Judging by their approach at today’s negotiations, they’re not planning on giving the rank and file employees much more than a lump of coal.
We meet with the County again on December 11!!
We will continue fighting for a better approach—one that recognizes the sacrifices you and your families have made and rewards your hard work during these challenging years. Thank you for reading these updates and continuing to stay informed.
In solidarity,
Nick Berardino
