250 The 1999 YZ250

Are you speculating that I am not getting on the pipe? If so, that is not the case.
We were out in the desert when we rode on Saturday and I let that thing rip whenever I had the chance.
It gets up and goes, but it doesn't feel clean, and feels like it could go some more.
It sputters a bit from about . Kinda like it did before.
I'm not opposed to fatten up the mix as you suggest, just that I was working in the one direction and I felt it was getting there, judging by the plug.
Main jet, needle and/or position.

Remember, a rich feeling will sputter. It misses and then catches and misses again in some cases. Lean will kind of fall on it's face and will usually try to pick back up if you close the throttle slowly (that richens it contrary to those who believe shutting the throttle off leans a bike out).

I am glad you showed the picture of the reeds: It is amazing how many people think they wont start with chips like that missing.

As to the compression test: No telling why the result was higher. On most rigs I get as high or higher when the whole reed block is removed, and usually the compression reading gets higher too. So if you aren't high enough now, you might try that.

It sputters a bit from about 1/4 throttle thru about 3/4 throttle. Kinda like it did before.

That bugger needs to hum. Now, you may be too fat on the bottom. When you back the air screw out 3 turns from fully seated does the idle change?

Yes, that is what it is doing. From just under 1/4 to near WFO.

I agree. It's got good compression.

I dont know, haven't messed with that yet.

This past Sat was the 1st I've ridden it since the new reeds. And since I idled in at the end of the day with a bike in tow, I decided to fire it back up today and let it warm up and rev it a bit in the garage, then plug chopped it.
Still black and sooty.
After I shut it down I noticed it was leaking fuel on the floor (not much), so I'm guessing from the carb overflow???, and when I pulled the plug it was wet. I've never noticed this before. I'm wondering if my float is an issue.
So I'm guessing I need to go back into the carb and start over. No problem, I can have thing off in 15 minutes now!
I'm going to order a new float.

That would good. Setting the float on a regular basis is good practice.

Floats are SPENDY. I would test that one first, did you ever replace the needle on it, or test it?

I did not replace it, but it looked okay.
And damn, you weren't kidding, $38.00 for that piece of plastic!
OEM parts are a total rip-off.

I got a new float needle coming, and Jets-R-Us has a float for 15.00 if decide to get one. I probably will, but they also have the 29mm valve shims for my KLX for $6.69 each so I will probably wait to combine shipping, unless I find my YZ float has sunk. Damn I wish I would have found those shims before I paid what I did for the 6 or 8 prior ones I bought that cost $15.00+ each and still aren't right.

Test the floats first. Just put them in a glass of water. If they float over night it's good

Wouldn't I also be able to submerge them under water and look for bubbles, like an inner tube?
Put them in water, see if they float evenly from side to side, ie both sides should have pretty much an idential amount protruding from the water. only takes about 10 seconds to check them that way

Yes, and yes...
But if there is any chance of a slight crack you will not see it unless you tie a weight to it and submerge it overnight in a glass of water. Vibration from a bike running and having slight pressure from being submerged may mimic that action. In the morning, float it again as Andy said.

I have had pretty good luck in finding a bad one the first time by taking it out of a running rig that has had it soaking. I have found one back Keihin float in from the leak aspect since 1987. Lots different than the old metal ones. The jikov carbed cz I used to own kind of proved to me that a brick could float. almost an fast turn would "sink" it enough to flood it.
