250 The 1999 YZ250

That silver stuff is anti-seize, wiped right off
I was on the pipe in the neighborhood! Just wasn't out there long, didn't want to attract the 5.0.

Yeah don't use that stuff on a dirtbike.
Not enough on the pipe to get it hot normally. Sneak that peak.

I didn't hear any pinging, but also not the most experienced ear either.
Otherwise piston looks good? Maybe newer?
I thought it looked pretty good, but then also not the most experienced eye for hi-po 2-strokes either.
I get the feeling that the prior owner took care of this bike. Lots of after-market add-ons. Plus it was recently registered in CA July 2016, so it was ridden recently.

Skirt looks good. Again, hard to tell by not being there.
We're the reeds ever checked? And is that residual casting material or water beads I see on the port sleeve?

I didn't notice any unusual smoke. I did notice a lack of smoke and an unusual scent from the pipe after my rip around the neighborhood yesterday,
So if it was running rich and I had to drop 4 jet sizes, that would mean that there is some extra air getting in somewhere, yes?

NO, it would mean you are getting TOO MUCH FUEL. and it isnt coming from the brass would be my guess.

bad reeds can let the fuel air mix get pushed back into the intake and pick up fuel going both ways. The dry tip that is trying to turn gray is cleaning it up on top it looks like, but the blackened body and porcelain say it is sloppy. a weak spring on the needle or bad needle and seat can do that too. both tend to make the bike worse at low rpms than higher ones.

I got those reeds coming, along with a set of front and rear wheel bearings, a master link for my new chain and sprockets. Just put on a new front tire today.
I'm thinking the reeds make good sense, especially after Andy mentioned the mixture getting pushed back into the intake, the wetness I found at the boot (I initially just assumed it was from fuel spilling when I removed the carb), and the less than ideal compression numbers.
I haven't removed or inspected the reeds that are in it yet, but I'm expecting them to be stock, and since I got the new top-end gasket kit (that Big Dan recommended) I figure a set of Boyesen reeds are in order when I tear it down.
I'm also feeling fairly good about the condition of the plug and the piston recently.
I should have her back in running condition by Wednesday, I'll report back then.
Until then I'm gonna continue working on the KLX, got a new clutch perch coming for that too.
Then after that it's the KX, the Magna, the Shadow...at least the two XR's run flawlessly and are 100% reliable.

Yes. Those are the reeds you want.
At 7 sizes lower than a ambient setting I would be concerned. IMO 178ish should be your ideal # and if your compression # is less than ideal then you are avoiding the most important part of a good running bike. With a fresh top end you'll be able to jet this properly and not have to worry about it being a factor anymore.

After I got the new front tire on yesterday I went to put it back on the bike and I noticed that tell-tale ratchety bearing noise when I rolled it and I was like, okay, time to take a break, set it aside and order some more parts. Since I hadn't put on the new chain and sprockets yet I ordered the rears too.
It just makes sense to me to have the reeds no matter what condition the ones in it are in. A peace of mind process of elimination I guess.
I looked at the parts fiche for the power valve, wondering if there's gonna be anything there I need to address.

I was hoping to bring it to the track this weekend and go play with it some more, and my son really wanted to go, but we're just gonna go trail riding instead now. Thats okay, I spent my track money on parts.
Since the KLX still has a broken clutch perch, it's gonna be tough getting on the XR200
