Other 1999 WR400F

Unless Timo is right (he's not) my $20.00 and 30 minute fix has turned into a $150.00 ten-day event.
I hate it when that happens !

But I've got it whittled down to under $110.00 right now, all OE (this includes a decomp cable), WITHOUT the clutch cover gasket.
Can the cover stay in place while I remove the engine side cover, or do I need this gasket too? Maybe use RTV?

you need the gasket no rtv when dealing w/the pump

I'm talking about the clutch cover gasket.
It's only another $8.00, but I just pulled the carb and it needs $45.00 minimum.
So things are adding up fast.

Buy the gasket, keep it as a spare if you get the cover off, and it's still good. I only use grease on my scooter paper gaskets just for this reason.

Lol, thanks Mike, but I'm good. I got $8.00.
And I've already designated which parts needed to be OE and have spent that money there first.
This is just one of the extras that got dropped from the must have OE pile that if I chose, I might spend my money unwisely. Or not at all.

You're right. You can leave the round clutch cover in place and just remove the engine side case to get to the water pump. And, if you did remove it, RTV should work to seal it up again.

If you want to call it the outer cover and the inner cover, I have used sealant alone lots of times on outer covers. If the inner cover came with a gasket like all the ones I have had apart did, the gasket acts to provide clearance for things like the shifting mechanism and kickstart on many two strokes and four strokes. I have pieced those together and used sealant more than once, but man, if there is any other way, DON'T.

I ordered OE inner cover gasket and water pump parts. I'm gonna try to not disturb the outer cover.

I'm trying not to be cheap here and spend my cash wisely, but I'm also trying to put together $450 to send my KX250 head out.

And since Yamaha wants $25.00 for a friggin' float bowl o-ring I chose to order an aftermarket carb kit for this thing as well, to the tune of around $90.00.
And here I thought only Kawasaki parts were a rip-off .

I'm an oem guy but Moose makes a great kit for about $18

Mike do you have a link by chance? I looked at the Moose website and looked through 40+ different kits but didn't see one for my bike. Closest they had was for a 450. I definitely need to find a better source for carb parts.
So I ordered the carb kit from the Netherlands, it was the least expensive one I could find that came with the accelerator pump diaphragm.
I like OE too, but in this case I had to go aftermarket for the carb, otherwise my cost would've easily been another $100.00.
I also chose to get the OE impeller shaft at $40.00, even though there is an aftermarket replacement for $20.00 on eBay.

I guess If I would have chose parents that were stinking rich I wouldn't have to make these kind of decisions, but I didn't...
