Other 1999 WR400F

I'm a gasket re-user I'll admit it. If it isn't ripped, I use latex gloves and get gasket maker on the thumb/finger and paste it on. Doesn't even have to be thick just a light coat. Works all the time. On clutch covers and easy stuff to remove I just use grease. Works all the time. Did I say it works all the time? Just make sure to clean any excess oil residue. I've sprayed the paper with copper coat. That works too. Also use fuel resistant tape for 0-rings. Wrap it in behind the 0-ring race and reset the ring, or if it's broken just wrap it with the tape. I'd never waste $20 on an 0-ring, at least not while there's a stripper who needs tuition.

Mike do you have a link by chance? I looked at the Moose website and looked through 40+ different kits but didn't see one for my bike. Closest they had was for a 450. I definitely need to find a better source for carb parts.
So I ordered the carb kit from the Netherlands, it was the least expensive one I could find that came with the accelerator pump diaphragm.
I like OE too, but in this case I had to go aftermarket for the carb, otherwise my cost would've easily been another $100.00.
I also chose to get the OE impeller shaft at $40.00, even though there is an aftermarket replacement for $20.00 on eBay.

I guess If I would have chose parents that were stinking rich I wouldn't have to make these kind of decisions, but I didn't...

They call that the gene pool lottery.

I find stuff like that on EBay. Same goes for my pistons. I'll save $30-40 on average by shopping on EBay for bike parts in advance and back in the day I kept a small parts dept with everything from oem Allen bolts to oem zip ties in the cupboard.

I'll see what I can find.

Hey I'm not racist but I am prejudiced. All nationalities of hot chicks.
You're a white guy from Texas. Of course you're racist!
Dont you read the news?
You probably believe that people should be able to own guns, and say whatever they want too...

Hmm magnesium per chance? Fill it, not often I recommend it but JB weld ( prefer Quicksteel as you know) will probs do for a while until you replace it!
Or replace it is the best way to get rid of said corrosion!

Hmm magnesium per chance?
Yep.
The corrosion of the magnesium isn't so bad, its just real flaky, so I scraped it off the best I could. Took a round steel brush to it. There is one small area where it ate through some but I think it could be filled.
I was thinking of RTVing the seal in place...???

I'm also thinking about reusing the side cover gasket since it came off in one piece. Its wet with oil though...

1000 posts...wow. Didn't even see that. Cool.

Okay, first let me get this off my chest-
Sunday I took the ol' WR to the track like I been doing and had the best friggin day of my life!
It was awesome. Temp was cool, track conditions were the best I've seen, bike runs well, and best of all, I killed it!
Killed it for me that is :thumb:. I rode the best I ever have, spent a lot of time in and out of ruts, increased my corner entry (and exit) speeds, didn't get arm pump, didn't crash. I learned a shit-ton and feel like I've reached a new plateau.

Now on to new questions-
1 - what is a preferred handlebar angle? Right now they are forward of the fork angle. Dude at the track said I should pull it back further...
2 - this bike has a big gap in the exhaust pipes and its backfiring badly on decel. The gap is probably all of 3/16". See below. Whoever had it before me had something in there but it was chintzy anyway and it went away when I did the water pump. I was thinking of buying a tool if available to expand it, or bringing it to a muffler shop and have them expand it.

Anybody got a better idea?
